Our invited guest speaker Dave McComb is the President and co-founder of Semantic Arts. He and his team help organizations uncover the meaning in the data from their information systems. Dave is also the author of “The Data-Centric Revolution”, “Software Wasteland” and “Semantics in Business Systems”. For 20 years, Semantic Arts has helped firms of all sizes in this endeavor, including Proctor & Gamble, Goldman Sachs, Schneider-Electric, LexisNexis, Dun & Bradstreet, and Morgan Stanley. Prior to Semantic Arts, Dave co-founded Velocity Healthcare, where he developed and patented the first fully model driven architecture. Prior to that, he was "a part of the problem".

Abstract: Companies need to use various application systems to support their business. It is estimated that one multi-user application system is needed for every 10 employees. Large companies can spend considerable IT budgets (approximately 3-7% of the revenue) on integrating all that data. With a combination of disciplines and technologies, we can keep things at bay like some digital-native firms (Google, LinkedIn and Facebook, etc.) that have avoided the problem of over proliferating their application systems by deploying graph databases at core. We will discuss what semantics are and their roles in grounding data design within the shared realities, compare graph databases with relational databases, and introduce some truly fascinating use cases of knowledge graphs in life sciences.
